ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis public housing community prepares for a new chapter after more than 80 years. Leaders say the re-development of Clinton-Peabody just south of downtown will bring new housing, new amenities, and new opportunities.

Over the years, residents have expressed concerns regarding aging buildings, maintenance issues and deteriorating conditions, leading to calls for change and the long-planned redevelopment.

Construction is already underway at Clinton-Peabody, as officials prepare to celebrate a ceremonial groundbreaking later this week. The project marks the first phase of a long-planned redevelopment of St. Louis’ oldest public housing complex.

Crews have begun work on the first phase of a redevelopment project that housing leaders say will reshape the historic community for generations to come.

Housing leader Stephanie Co discussed the project’s vision for the residents.

“For this grand vision, residents have to have a safe, flourishing community where everyone feels welcome and residents we’re really excited to do new construction, to really just get a fresh start, get really modern amenities,” Co said.
